Episode 27 - How Do You Stay Connected With Your Teen?

The Cunningham Family
For the first time ever on Family Time Q&A, we have Brandon Cunningham (@GBrandonC) join us during a father-son session. Brandon is married to Rene, and they are the parents of five children ranging from 13 years old up to 20 years old. He is currently serving as the Executive Pastor of Grace Community Church in Corpus Christi, Texas.

I am honored to say that Brandon has been a good friend of mine for nearly a decade. I have had the honor to serve with him in ministry, be an accountability partner with him, and we even suggested he change his name to Brandon Duganham (but that didn’t fly.)

You can follow Brandon's blog, Living the Dream, here.

Jacob’s question: What kinds of things do you like to do for fun with your kids?

Brandon’s question: Jacob, what would you rather do with your dad instead of what you normally do with him?

My question: What advice would you like to give to fathers of teens?

Our question to you: How do you keep the door open between you and your children?

  1. Well, my teens are now 27 and 30, so I connect with them in much different ways today that we didn't have 10+ years ago. But back in the day (as my girls would say), I drove them to school every day and we would have conversations on the 30 minute trip, dinner with the family most nights unless there was an activity that displaced us, and they traveled with us when we would do ministry trips so we even worked together in their teen years at different events. Today it is more text and Facebook. They are pretty busy, but we still see them two or three times a month. Usually one of us talks with them by phone every day. Don't know if that's what you're looking for, but it's worked for us pretty well.

    1. Dinner as a family is a big deal for us. Breakfast on the weekends, too. One activity we love doing is called "Rose, Thorn, and Bud". Each person takes a turn to describe their highlights for the day (roses), then their biggest challenges or disappointments (thorns), and their hopes for the next day (buds). The buds do not have to be solutions to their thorns, but can be.
